I don’t know Eric’s number my sister Lisa does. He is currently at work. He is on Facebook. I will contact him this evening and let him know. Look him up on Facebook. Hello! Cynthia Davis, the actress who played “Brenda” in Cooley High is ALIVE! After watching Unsung Hollywood her family, especially me, the younger sister was upset. The investigative team failed in their job and that is my opinion. I was trying to leave a picture of her for you. I am talking with Lisa, her sister. We are trying to contact Eric her brother to see who remembers Jon Wicks and Jennifer Merriweather.
I knew Cynthia and her family back in the 70’s again her brother was my best so that is why i am looking for Eric&Norma Davis her brother & sister if anyone help me find them i would be thankful. Thanks.
Jon Wicks, did you live in South Commons also? You are correct, I now remember Norma. I always remembered her but not her name. But they also had a younger sister. I am 50 now, her brother was maybe 1 or 2 years older than me, then Norma was my age but their younger sister was maybe 2 years younger then me. I remember that Eric was fair-skinned, (like all of them), and that he had curly hair. I lived on the 3rd floor of a three story building and they lived on the 2nd floor.

Lol! Sounds as if she might have been the child, and we all know them-including some of us, whose parents needed to keep an eye on! While it sounds intriguing and I’ll admit to being curious about what occurred, it might be a bit premature to mention it.
I say that because collectively, we are uncertain about her condition and if her family reads our comments, I’d hope we would want them to be comfortable to join in our discussion and share the insight they have. Ideally, if she is still with us, then it would be so much fun to have her join the conversation. However, if subsequent information points out definitively that she is no longer with us, then our discussion becomes a memorial. Either way, whatever her condition-above or below ground-I’m in for the duration. It seems there must be a place where she can be visited.
A question for Jon, M, and Xavier: Have you been back to the neighborhood that you describe? Has it changed much or has it changed so much that you’d have trouble recognizing it? While I used to visit the area where you lived pretty frequently (stationed at NAS in Glenview, IL), the last time I actually went south of the Planetarium was during 1972. So while I’m older than you and about 6 years older than Cynthia, it is ironic how often I encounter situations and people that confirm the world, after all, is not such a big place.

Lpedwar, Chicago has changed tremendously. The housing complex across the street has been replaced. Michael Reese hospital is completely gone but South Commons still seems very quaint. I drive through there about once a year when I return to Chiraq, I mean Chicago.
Eric is currently living in Spring Lake, MI with his father. Norma, is that who is who are thinking of, however Norma is the younger sister you spoke of Lisa is probably who you are talking about. Norma is in Las Vegas. Lisa lives in Muskegon, MI.
Cindy, I just got caught back up with the convo. I knew your Mother, Aunts and Uncle. We lived in South Commons for a couple of years together. The actual building address was 2727 South Indiana on Chicago’s near southside. I remember the floor that they lived on because they lived below me down the hall. Just watched unsung on tvone and they said cynthia davis passed away about 10 year ago . So if your related to her then someone is not telling the truth.
Nobody Said anything about Pooter??? Corin Rogers or Rodgers, either way I had the informal meeting with him about 25 years ago. As funny as it may seem he was under my nose for about 2 years. I lived on the North Side of Chicago and was a member of the Boys and Girls Club Robert McCormick Unit off of Sheridan. To this day my brother and I thought he always looked familiar we just couldn’t put our finger on where we know him from, Until one day we watch Cooley High and seen his face and knew it was Corin!! Pooter got hit by Gorilla @!#$!!!! Classic!!! Movie is so True to Life!!!

I think that they still lived there. There were a lot of us teenagers and we played baseball, running up and down the halls knocking on people’s doors, stuff kids do, so I think that they still lived there. I even remember which apartment was theirs. It was nothing for us to go pick each other up at our parents’ apartments. I lived on the 3rd floor close to the then grocery store. They lived on the 2nd floor, on the other end of the building near the Square (playground).
Exactly: You made the case for a “would be starlet”; the subsequent demise of yet another tragic beauty.
However, its important to note the cornerstones of life and the vital role they play in professional/ personal success and happiness. The following components…..character, principles, values, life skills, self esteem and determination are key because without a moral compass the structure is weak. Hi, Nikki. Actually, I provided a scenario whose plausibility is predicated upon the information that prompted its creation. It cannot be overstated that without any first-hand input it is merely a scenario.
Within the scenario the overriding suggestion is to consider forgiveness. You mention the cornerstones of life (character, principles, values, life skills, self-esteem, and determination) as being key elements to a healthy moral compass. I’m afraid it would be a relatively easy exercise to demonstrate that via many examples not only does the world not regurgitate those with questionable moral fiber, there are giants in industries that are extremely successful without the impediments of the cornerstones that are mentioned. But that would put us on a needless and circuitous tangent. The point is there is a fundamental flaw with the cornerstones that are mentioned-they are all acquired traits and their refinement takes time. In the interim, the real key-the foundation on which your characteristics are based-is a foundation of love and forgiveness. It might be easier to not focus on the vocation of the person-in this instance a, “…would be starlet…”, but rather focus on the person-a teenager: at that age, what degree of refinement are you expecting to be in place? How might those expectations be met when it can be stated categorically that within varying degrees the basic wiring of the human mind is not completed until age 21? The characteristics you point out all require the capacity to reason, so it can be expected that reasoning skills will be less than ideal until our physiology permits the full complement of reasoning to occur. And even then we still don’t seem to be able to get it right!
All I am attempting is to inject the notion of forgiveness in this discussion. It is a tragedy-perhaps even more tragic because it appears it could have been mitigated. But there may still be hope, if it is not too late, there is still a way the dream can be realized.
There is no denying that she was endowed with the gift of beauty and an abundance of talent. Regarding her capacity to love, forgive, trust, care-they’re reliant on her capacity to change so we may never know their extent within her. I can only hope for Ms. Davis that she has within herself the courage, willingness, and strength so desperately needed to forgive…herself.

She use to come to the Elks in Muskegon, Michigan long ago and told me she was living in Grand Haven, Michigan with her Mother and Step Father….She told me her Mom was White and her Dad was Black….I use to shoot pool against her husband Frank and we would laugh because my husband name is Frank too….They would pop in about 3 times a month because he was a truck driver…I know on one occasion he said she was in a depression when we asked where she was….That was many many years ago…..

For any additional information that you might be able/willing to share, please share it within the framework of preserving any and all rights of privacy to which they are entitled: Can you recall how you came to know her? Did you recognize her immediately or were you able to later determine who she was? Instinctively, what was your initial opinion of her and did it change over time you spent with her?

I love the movie Cooley High. Unfortunately, each time I see the classic movie bittersweet feelings arise in my heart. It truly is a masterpiece. The actors and everyone associated with the film are worthy of much praise for giving us such a timeless movie. I’ve always wondered whatever happened to Cindy.
I met Cindy when I was 4 yr old. She was so pretty and sassy. She dated my 24 yr old married father when she was 17 and was cast for the movie Cooley High. She and my fathers relationship left a lasting impact on my life. Shortly after the movies successful release she and my father were riding high and moved to CA. Borh in search of acting opportunities. It didn’t pan out for either of them. Subsequently, they returned to Chicago. She and my father got an apt together for a few months and I would visit on weekends. One time I will never forget. She slapped me in my face because I wouldn’t eat. I told my sweet little mother and naturally this news added to her pain. Cindy called my mother on two occasions once at home to explain that she did t slap me in the face, but pushed my shoulder. The next time she called my mom at work to tell her that she was pregnant with my dad child. She asked my mother to raise the baby because she wanted to continue to peruse her career even though she was working at Marshal Fields on Randolph Downtown Chicago. She further told my mother that she asked her to raise the baby because my father said she is a good mother. My mother declined the request. Months later Cindy gave birth to a baby girl that was dead upon arrival.
I am now 44 yr old with my own family. I am keenly aware that my selection in husbands had everything to do with what little ones shouldn’t have to endure. Needless to say, the moment in time 1974-75 had a profound affect of how I view parenting, love, family, affairs and the other woman. Incidentally, my parents are still married now for 45 yrs.
Over the years I’ve wondered about Cindy and how life has been for her. I wondered if Karma visited her marriage and children. I wonder if she really is deseased or doesn’t want to be seen because her life is not what she hoped it would be as it relates to acting. I wonder if she has really passed away, if so God bless her soul. If not, I hope she reads this note.
Your synopsis was read with a good deal of interest and guarded optimism that what was being conveyed is grounded in fact. Insofar as there is so much conflicting and false information available, I hope you’ll agree my approach-in an attempt to better determine what sort of person she might have been at that point in her life-is understandable.
The timeline you provide certainly seems plausible. Among other things, it suggests your parents were married in 1969 and your father, at the time, was 19. Additionally, it suggests Ms. Davis was 12 at the time your parents married. Also, you have shared they had been married for approximately 5 years before your father’s involvement with Ms. Davis when she reached age 17. There is no indication who initiated the relationship between them, but it seems clear she was not encumbered by marital obligations. It is also plausible to conclude that at 17 years of age, neither males nor females are especially noted for wisdom in any capacity.
At 17 years of age she was able to achieve a milestone most can only dream about. Of course in retrospect it would appear she reached the apex of her acting career, but likely at the time it might have been perceived as getting her career off the ground. Correspondingly, it is unclear what influence your father was exerting during this time of unparalleled joy and opportunity-after all it was her effort and talent that was primarily responsible for the initial success, was it not? So it appears at 17, perhaps, 18 you mention, she and your father moved shortly after the movie’s release, “…[both] in search of acting opportunities…” This would coincide with another responder to the blog who indicated she knew Ms. Davis when they worked together at the Great Western Bank in Van Nuys, Calif.
You continue by stating their return to Chicago; it is unclear how long she was out there, but can be reasonably certain the return was under circumstances other than what she had initially envisioned. From this point on things appear to spiral downwardly. By any stretch of imagination, this must have been a tumultuous time in her life and yes, it does reflect a fair amount on unwise choices. Nevertheless, it would be wrong to conclude the decisions were being made unilaterally-she was being influenced during a time in her life by a person who knew barely as much as she did about the Film industry. It would be reasonable to expect some semblance of overriding sadness was in place because of the return to Chicago. Isn’t it reasonable to suggest your encounter with her might have been-even marginally-exacerbated by the circumstances surrounding her situation? It seems unreasonable to expect her to act, to be, the same person as the 18 year old that left with a heart full of dreams.
Not for a second do I condone the manner in which the instance of discipline as you have stated was handled; I merely state it is relatively easy to understand how such a thing might occur. Have you taken the opportunity to point out to your father his overall accountability during that period and his impact in her life, or has it been more convenient to place all the responsibility with her. She might have been in a relationship that was not beneficial, but it was relationship he created for a 17 year old with a dream and the ability to make that dream happen. Sorry, I respectfully disagree with any notion that Karma had anything to do with her subsequently stated misfortune-given what you’ve shared it is unlikely that she would have been the only one affected. Never too late to resolve the pain you carry by acknowledging the source of your apparent anger.

True story. Cynthia Davis and her family lived in the same building as I did when Cooley High was being filmed. South Commons on 29th street on South Indiana. Near Mercy and Michael Reese Hospitals and next to Dunbar High school. I knew her, her sisters and brother.
So what happened to her brothers and sisters? What happened to her?
As a teenager we all played together. Cynthia was about 5 years older then us so she didn’t run around with our group. We were about 11 to 14 years old so she was about 19. Her 2 younger sisters were cute also, for little skinny teenagers and I remember that the neighborhood girls really liked their brother. You know, light-skinned, curly hair, that kind of thing. This was about in 1976. My parents moved from South Commons in 1978. I do remember that the oldest, of Cynthia’s younger sisters, was attractive and closer to my age. I will be 50 this year. We all lived in an apartment building at 2727 S. Indiana Ave in Chicago IL on the near southside.
Cynthia live is Michigan. Her brother and two sisters reside in Michigan as well. She has another sister in Las Vegas. She recently, well 2002, discover her half sister, that is me.
Now we can all stop wondering. i am chino,watching TV ONE blk channel it is on tonight,repetaedly past few days. I was watching Unsung Hollywood and the segment was about Cooley High. It was either the director or a cast member of the movie Cooley High that said that he had heard the Cynthia Davis (Brenda) has been dead for about 10 years.
If Cynthia is alive and well why did un-song not follow up on her nieces knowing of her where about ? and DEDE Tillman why did you not follow up on this so called niece story of knowing the where about of her Aunt? all of this sounds like a lot of bunk . and its to bad that this sight supports this Bunk. I feel she is no longer with us as the show told us and she died 10 years ago.

It is a real mystery about her, but if you are familiar with the show called Unsung on TV One, they usually tell of the stories being performing artists they never “crossed over”, now they have a movie version called Unsung Hollywood, in which they revolved the whole show around Cooley High, the actor who played her boyfriend, Glynn Turman said that the last he had heard about her was that she infact passed away 10 years ago, he is not sure of the circumstances.

Sorry to interrupt but I believe the investigative team did no t do their job. There is a paper trail to follow is they are still receiving residual checks, hers is going somewhere, right to where she lives, in Michigan. You are right, there is a lot of bunk and junk out there with people who say they are related to her, I believe they have her confused with another actress named Cynthia Davis.

I want to thank UnSung for for trying to find out what’s going on, It was not Unsung that said she was dead. I think it was the Director who said “He Heard” she had died about 10 years ago. What is her married name? What is she doing? Is Cynthia still in the entertainment field?

I have a friend who works with Jackie from Cooley High. I have been searching for information on Cynthia Davis (Brenda) for years and finally thought to ask my friend(duh) today of her whereabouts and yes I am sorry to say she has passed on 10 years ago. We have also tried to locate Ms Cynthia Davis and had no luck. So we are going to talk about this in the episode. Cast members could not answer this question either. Very strange. No, I am 41 yrs old and I remember when Benji Wilson was killed and that was in 1984 and I was 12; Benji’s death marked the beginning of the tragic reality of teens being killed (Benji was destined for greatness)! Cooley High is one of my favorite movies and saddest – it is based upon someone’s experience in the 60 ‘ s who lived in Cabrini Green in Chicago. Two completely different decades. . If you have not seen Cooley High you have done yourself a disservice. . You can probably order it on amazon. com. I hope this helped

My aunt and uncle which were current citizen of the projects at that time played in the movie Cooley High, as well as that my mother was a student at the school…
Cynthia also went to Unity High in Chicago for a year she left after she got the role in Cooley High. I always think about her, we were classmates at Unity

Well I guess you have to look no further for my aunt: Cyndia Davis. I have no way of posting an up to date photo cause I’m new to this, and just happen to see all this. This is my dad’s baby sister. It’s true she kept out of the spotlight,but did infact do productions on a few commented movies as well some cameo shots. She is still beautiful as ever,even at her age. She does want to come out to a talk show and speak of her out-take on acting. She is alive and still kicking!!!!!

All you have to do is either watch ” where are they now” on TVONE, or look deeper, she is not alive, they even told us when she passed away when it was shown on TVONE. Man, are you all not getting this? She passed about 10-15 years ago…..So you have no recent picture of her in this recent day and time.

I remember her brother (Eric?) being younger than Cynthia. Unless they had another, older sibling. I remember only 3 of them from back then. Cynthia, her brother whom I remember being named Eric, and a younger sister. Once again, Cynthia being about 4 years older then me, her brother about 2 years older than me and her sister being about 1 year younger than me. I am 50 in 2014.

Cooley High is one of the best comming of age movies of all time! I’m 39 yrs old, I saw this movie yrs ago and it never left me. I love the fact that Alica Keys paid tribute to Cooley High in her video You Don’t Know My Name…the video also featured Mos Def. I am also one of the thousands of people that would love to know what Cythia Davis (Brenda) is doing now!

Loved Cynthia Davis in Cooley High and wondered, like apparently a lot of people, what happened to her. I started to look figuring Wikipedia, if no other site, would provide some information, but alas nothing. Anyway good luck in your search. Preach’s other girlfriend, the one who literally and figuratively “stiffed” him in the hallway make-out session and later slept with Cochise, was pretty cute too. Lastly, I saw Cooley High when it came out and I just watched it again on Youtube and I got to say that seeing Chicago – grew up there – the way it was back then really brought back memories.

Just got through watching “Cooley High” and I must say that Cynthia Davis definately caught my eye with her looks; didn’t care much for her acting though. From what the credits say, she is married with (at the time) three children. With professional lessons, she could have continued on as a very successful actress/actor.

Garret Morris did not play in “Lean On Me” and neither did Robert Townsend play in “Cooley High”. Cynthia Davis is one fine woman though. I fell in love with her at the same time “Preach” di in 1975. In 1991 Cynthia Davis was the Assistant Director to a film called ” Driving Me Crazy”, in 1991 she was the production assistant in “Rock N’ Roll High School Forever” the location assistant in House Party 2 in the same year. I would love to see her make another movie appearance or television appearance. She is just as beautiful as Lonette McKee if not more beautiful. Come sis, the entertainment needs more natural beauty like yours.

If you watch TVONE, they had all the actors on there that are still living, and tha’ts where folks found out that Cynthia has passed on. Lawrence still looks the same, just 10 pounds heavier, but looks good for his age…and Pooter looks the same, just 50 pounds heavier. One of the fellas that was a gangster in the movie passed on in a stabbing, ( light skin one ) and of course the one that threw the party in the apartment and the china cabinet busted, she was on there as well, I did not reconize her until she opened her mouth and she had the same gap in between her front teeth. But they lall look good for their age.
I use to work with Cynthia Davis at Great Western Bank in Van Nuys, Ca. I would really like to touch bases with her again. She was a good friend.
