Prince Harry has made his recording debut after being recruited by Gary Barlow to play on his Jubilee single.
The Prince, a keen music fan, refused to sing on the track but agreed to bash a tambourine which the Take That star recorded to use in the song.
The track, called Sing, was written by Barlow and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and also features the chart-topping Military Wives. When it is released later this month it is expected to be the first chart single to feature a specially-recorded member of the Royal Family .
Harry added his contribution by hitting the instrument while he was visiting Jamaica – also one of the stopping points when Barlow travelled to various Commonwealth countries to compile the song.
The musician used his laptop as a portable studio to gather recordings from locations such as Australia, Kenya and the Solomon Islands.
The Prince features alongside a number of notable names including celebrated reggae rhythm section Sly & Robbie, plus guitarist Ernest Ranglin, famed for playing on the Dr No soundtrack as well as on timeless 60s hit My Boy Lollipop.
Barlow said he had become fond of Harry after meeting him a few times. “He’s fun and relaxed and he’s a really nice kid.
“We caught him on his last day in Jamaica. We turned up and I asked him would he play on the record and he said ‘I don’t sing’. But I said ‘no, no – I don’t want you to sing, I want you to play the tambourine’. And so he said it’ll cost you.
“Then we met him later on that night and he did the tambourine hit and we spun it into the track. He probably hasn’t got a clue what he’s part of just yet.”
Asked if the prince exhibited any musical talent, Barlow said simply: “No.”
“He’s a great guy Harry – a lot of people I met in Australia, he was their favourite. They loved him, especially the older women. I think he’s one of the Queen’s favourites as well,” he added.
The track is credited to Gary Barlow & The Commonwealth Band, which includes 210 musicians from across the Commonwealth – one of the largest groups of musicians to appear on a UK single.
They include the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force Band, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, young drummers from Kenya’s Kibera slum and the Australian musician Gurrumul.
The line-up of the Military Wives choir – which was assembled by Gareth Malone – features two new soloists. Elizabeth Simpson from Catterick and Rebecca Ellen Marshall from Wattisham were specially auditioned for the single.
The recording was mixed at the famed Abbey Road Studios in London and Sing will be performed live at the Diamond Jubilee Concert in front of Buckingham Palace on June 4.
The song also features on a commemorative Jubilee album by Barlow which also includes guest vocalists Hayley Westenra, Laura Wright and Alfie Boe.
Sing will be given its first radio play on Chris Evans’s breakfast show on Radio 2 at 8am today and will be released by Decca Records on May 28.
According to CNN, Britain’s Prince Harry is to travel to the United States to be presented with a prestigious award honoring his work with war veterans and serving members of the armed forces.
The Prince will visit Washington D.C. on May 7 to receive the Atlantic Council’s award for “distinguished humanitarian leadership,” St James’s Palace announced Monday.
As well as attending the prizegiving dinner at the Atlantic Council, Prince Harry is also expected to meet British and American athletes who have taken part in the Warrior Games, a paralympic sports tournament for armed services personnel, in Colorado.
It is not yet clear if he will attend other events while in the country. Prince Harry is said to be “honored” by news of the award, which he plans to accept on behalf of his brother and their foundation.
St James’s Palace says he will use the event to pay tribute to the work of British and American charities which help to rehabilitate wounded servicemen and women, and to reintegrate veterans into civilian life.
The Atlantic Council is a non-partisan U.S.-based think-tank which promotes transatlantic cooperation and international security.
The Queen’s granddaughter Lady Louise is recovering at home after breaking her arm in a riding accident.
The Earl and Countess of Wessex’s daughter fell from her horse on Thursday morning while she was riding in the grounds of Windsor Castle.
Eight-year-old Louise, who was seen last week accompanying her grandmother to an Easter service, now has her left arm in a cast.
She is being looked after at the family home in Bagshot Park by her mother Sophie, who cancelled a scheduled visit to a cancer hospital to be with her daughter.
Edward went ahead with the engagement, visiting the Christie in Withington, after learning his daughter hadn’t been seriously injured.
A Buckingham Palace representative said on Thursday: “Lady Louise broke her left arm after falling from her pony while riding at Windsor this morning.
“She has been treated by doctors and is now resting at home.
“The Countess of Wessex was supposed to go to Manchester today with the Earl but understandably stayed with her daughter.”
Lady Louise has inherited her grandmother’s love of riding, and has been taught by the monarch and her groomers since she was little.
Though the Queen doesn’t wear a helmet, she insists her grandchildren are properly protected while riding – and it’s understood Louise was wearing a hard hat and back brace when the accident happened.
The little girl, who is ninth in-line to the throne, is a regular visitor at Windsor Castle’s royal mews, where her pony is stabled.
Louise, who has a younger brother – four-year-old James,Viscount Severn – is largely kept out of the spotlight by her parents, but has increasingly been in the public eye since the duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding last year.
She suffers from extropia, a rare eye condition that has left her with a slight squint.
It is thought that she has had surgery to correct it, but may require more.
According to Sky News, Duchess of Cornwall Camilla Parker Bowles has been made a a Dame Grand Cross – the highest female rank in the Royal Victorian Order.
The announcement comes on the day of the seventh wedding anniversary of Camilla and the Prince of Wales.
The pair married on April 9, 2005 in a civil ceremony at the Guildhall in Windsor after spending a number of years as a couple.
Awards under the Royal Victorian Order are in the Queen’s personal gift and are given to people who have served her or the monarchy in a special way. They are bestowed independently of 10 Downing Street.
The Order was founded in April 1896 by Queen Victoria as a way of rewarding personal service to her.
It is likely the award recognises 64-year-old Camilla’s hard work as a member of the Royal Family.
In the past seven years she has carried out hundreds of engagements and taken on a wide range of patronages.
She has also travelled extensively overseas with Prince Charles on official visits.
A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said the Duchess will be invested with the insignia of her rank at a later date.

Princess Beatrice got her running shoes on at the weekend to part in a five-mile race on Sunday.
The young royal was competing alongside 5,000 members of the public who had been chosen to inaugurate the athletics track in the newly renovated Olympic Stadium in Stratford, East London.
“I am thrilled to be able to play my part in such a historic occasion and it is fantastic to see the incredible transformation that the Olympic Park has undergone,” she told crowds as runners took their positions.
“I, like so many others running on the day, know that the experience of being one of the first to cross the Olympic finish line is an extraordinary moment in what promises to be a memorable year for the nation”.
After sounding the klaxon to start the race, the Queen’s granddaughter then joined the throng to complete the task in a respectable 45 minutes 45 seconds – crossing the finish line to the sounds of Chariots of Fire.
The jog won’t have been too taxing for Beatrice, who is used to these kinds of sporting events.
In 2010 she became the first member of the royal family to run the London marathon, raising money for the charity Children in Crisis.

The paper reports that Prince Harry made the “secret” move into his one-bedroom apartment last week. At the end of the year, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will move into Princess Margaret’s old apartment at the palace, at which point Prince Harry will take their Nottingham Cottage.
According to the Daily Mail’s source, Prince Harry made the decision to move out of his old room at Clarence House, where he lived with father Prince Charles, while abroad.
Prince Harry and Prince William were so enthusiastic about the idea of living together that when it emerged that this apartment was free, Harry moved his gear in as soon as he could after returning from Brazil,” the source says. “It’s a small, one-bedroomed apartment and he’s is very happy with the arrangement.”
According to AFP, Prince Harry 27, landed in Belize on Friday on the first stop of a tour of the Caribbean and Central America to mark his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, a palace official said.
Harry landed at Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport near Belize City at around 4:30 pm (2230 GMT), a spokeswoman for the prince’s Clarence House residence told AFP.
Making his first solo tour, the third in line to the British throne will also visit the Bahamas and Jamaica on the seven-day trip before travelling to Brazil on March 9 on behalf of the British government.
“The Prince is hugely looking forward to representing the Queen and he will bring his own brand of enthusiasm and energy to every event,” said Harry’s private secretary Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton.
He added that the tour of the three countries, which all have the queen as head of state, reflected “Harry’s wish to pay personal tribute to his grandmother the queen, but also to spend time wherever possible with young people in all three countries”.
The prince’s tour is one of several being made by British royals in 2012 as part of celebrations marking sixty years of Elizabeth II’s reign..
In Belize, Harry will meet the governor-general and attend a street party, while in Jamaica he hopes to race against the world’s fastest man Usain Bolt when he visits the sprinter’s training track in Kingston.
