Congratulations to actress Octavia Spencer 39, on winning best supporting actress at the SAG awards on Sunday January 29, 2012. According to People, Spencer said ” “I am not healthy at this weight, “Any time you have too much around the middle, then there is a problem. [And] when you reach a certain weight, you are less valuable.” According to People Spencer said, Hollywood should be more accepting of actresses of different sizes. “I feel for the overly thin women as much as I do for the overweight women. It … has to change.” According to People.
I can relate to Spencer regarding having too much weight for Hollywood. I’ve studied acting all my life and had big dreams of becoming a Soap Star. I had professional pictures made and sent them to Daytime Drama “Day Of Our Lives,” just to be an atmosphere actress to get the feel of soap acting.
I remember calling the atmosphere casting for Days Of Our Lives asking for work and I was told “Oh let me pull your photo, she then said “Oh sorry we can’t use you.” I was crushed; however, “Days Of Our Lives still remains to be my favorite soap.
In Hollywood “Central Casting” is a casting agency for actors and when you call them looking for work you hear “We are looking for a smoking hot body, must be blonde, blue eyes and wear size 0-2 and this is 99.9 % of the time. The only time Hollywood is looking for plus size actresses is when they need a crowd.
This is why I support actors/writers/directors Tyler Perry and Spike Lee because they cast REAL people, real life situations, all sizes. If you are not a size 2 and look like Halle Berry, Hollywood does not need you, will not write for you; therefore, you will never be cast if you are over-size 4.
