On November 19, 2011 drum major for Florida A&M marching band was allegedly hazed after playing in a football game in Orlando.
Champion’s parents Robert Champion Sr. and Pam Champion were interviewed on CNN’s Anderson Cooper’s 360 with Jason Carroll about their son’s death. Carroll reported that the Champions got a call from Robert’s sister that she got a call from someone who said that Robert Jr. had a problem with breathing.
There was a 911 call made by one of the band members that said he (Robert Jr.) was inside the bus, not responding, and his eyes were open.
Investigators suspect hazing as the cause of Robert Sr.’s death and CNN spoke with some of the band members that stated, Robert Sr.’s death could have been a result of rites of passage called “Crossing Bus C” which is the name of the bus that Robert Sr. was on November 19, 2011.
CNN also interviewed one of the band members who didn’t want to be identified said that “you have to walk from the front to the back of the bus backwards while the bus is full of band members and you get beat until you get to the back”. Carroll asked “the point of this is what” and the unidentified band member answered “for respect” and the beatings he talked about is called thunder and lightning. “Thunder is a straight hit to the chest and lightning is when you get a slap to the shoulders for a mistake during a performance or a way for a band member to gain respect”.
The band director Julian White was fired after Robert Champion death and the bands performances have been suspended indefinitely.
