Kanye West has been charged with battery and attempted theft over a scuffle with a paparazzo at Los Angeles Airport on July 19 this year.
The photographer, Daniel Ramos, sued Mr West after he allegedly punched him and chucked his camera on the ground.
According to West’s lawyers, he had simply been trying to prevent the snapper from taking pictures of him. The hearing has been set for October10, but West is not required to appear if he has a lawyer.
If found guilty, he faces a maximum penalty of six months in prison.
Kanye West is talented, and not many will dispute that. But he’s also a raging ego-maniac, and not many will dispute that, either.
West is notorious for comments he’s made about himself over the years, including but not limited to comparing himself to Michael Jordan.
“I realize that my place and position in history is that I will go down as the voice of this generation, of this decade, I will be the loudest voice,” he said in an interview on Wednesday. “It’s me settling into that position of just really accepting that it’s one thing to say you want to do it and it’s another thing to really end up being like Michael Jordan.”
He’s also made some arguable claims about others in the industry:
“The greatest, biggest pop-cultural figure of all time, arguably bigger than Jesus Christ, is Michael Jackson.”
West made headlines in 2009 when he interrupted young country star Taylor Swift–who was onstage to receive her award for Best Female Video at the MTV Video Awards–to grab the mic from her hand and declare that while her video was good, Beyonce had one of “the best videos of all time”. Beyonce was one of Swift’s fellow nominees in the category.
He’s shocked audiences for years with his absurd rants and high opinion of himself, and now it seems the general public isn’t alone in recognizing his jackassery. The prez himself says that while he thinks Kanye is talented, he prefers Jay-Z, and said so to David Samuels of The Atlantic.
“Although I like Kanye,” Obama continues, with an easy smile. “He’s a Chicago guy. Smart. He’s very talented.” He is displaying his larger awareness of the question, looking relaxed, cerebral but friendly, alive to the moment, waiting for me to get to the heart of the matter.
“Even though you called him a jackass?,” I ask.
“He is a jackass,” Obama says, in his likable and perfectly balanced modern-professorial voice. “But he’s talented.”
Obama first mentioned his feelings towards the rapper back in 2009, right after the Taylor Swift incident.
“The young lady seems like a perfectly nice person. She’s getting her award. What’s he doing up there? He’s a jackass,”

It looks like Kim Kardashian is ready for romance.
Although she told British Cosmopolitan in an interview that was done months ago that she wasn’t ready to date – she has changed her tune.
The reality star, who is still fighting to legally end her 72-day marriage to basketball player Kris Humphries, has moved on romantically with her longtime friend, musician Kanye West.
“Kim and Kanye have now just started dating,” a source close to the situation tells PEOPLE.
The pair are keeping things “light” for now, but “they’re seeing where it goes,” the source adds.
West, 34, and Kardashian, 31, have supported one another as friends for quite some time, with West even making appearances on the star’s E! show. “They have been close friends for years and decided to give it a try [with dating],” says the source.
For his part, West hasn’t exactly been shy about his feelings for Kardashian. In his new song “Theraflu,” West sings, “I admit I fell in love with Kim … ‘Round the same time she fell in love with him … That’s cool, babygirl, do your thing … Lucky I ain’t had Jay drop him from the team.” (West is referring to his pal Jay-Z who owns the New Jersey Nets, the team Humphries plays for.)
The new couple enjoyed a movie date on Wednesday in New York City, where they reportedly saw The Hunger Games. They were also spotted having lunch at Serafina in N.Y.C. on Thursday.
Kardashian is in town to host the Today Show Friday.
As for Humphries, Kardashian has “completely moved on in a good way,” says another source.
