The Korean language (한국어/조선말) is the official and national language of both Koreas: the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the Republic of Korea (South Korea), with different standardized official forms used in each territory. It is also one of the two official languages in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture and Changbai Korean Autonomous County of the People’s Republic of China. Approximately 80 million people worldwide speak Korean. According to, Wikipedia

Vocabulary

The core of the Korean vocabulary is made up of native Korean words. A significant proportion of the vocabulary, especially words that denote abstract ideas, are Sino-Korean wordseither

The exact proportion of Sino-Korean vocabulary is a matter of debate. Sohn (2001) stated 50–60%.[39] Later, the same author (2006, p. 5) gives an even higher estimate of 65%. Jeong Jae-do, one of the compilers of the dictionary Urimal Keun Sajeon, asserts that the proportion is not so high. He points out that Korean dictionaries compiled during the colonial period include many unused Sino-Korean words. In his estimation, the proportion of native Korean vocabulary in the Korean language might be as high as 70%. According to, Wikipedia.

Visiting Korea

korean-classroom

1. 안녕하세요 (annyeonghaseyo) – Hello

The most basic thing you can say as a conversation starter is “hello.” Even if you don’t know how to strike up a full conversation with someone, it’s always useful to say hello when you’re entering a store or a restaurant.

image

2.  합니다 (joe-song-ham-ni-da) – Sorry

Not used to the way things work in Korea? In a rush and accidentally bump into someone? You can never go wrong with a simple “I’m sorry” if you’re ever stuck in an unfavorable situation.

image2

3. 주세요 (ju-se-yo)  – Please/Please give me

When you’re asking someone in the store for something or ordering something on menu, say “juseyo” at the end of whatever you want and you’ll be sure to get it.

image4

4. 반갑습니다 (ban-gap-sum-ni-da) – Nice to meet you

After striking up a conversation with someone after saying hello, it is polite to continue with, “nice to meet you” before you say anything else.

photo6

5. 잠시만요 (jam-shi-man-yo) – Give me a second/Hold on

Busy with a task while someone is bothering you to answer their question? To get them to stop talking for a moment tell them “jamshimanyo” which is equivalent to “hold on” or “give me a second.”

image5

6. 감사합니다 (kam-sa-ham-ni-da) – Thank you

Just like in other countries, once someone does a favor for you, you must say “kamsahamnida” which is the formal method of saying “thank you.”

photo

7.어디예요 (o-di-ye-yo) – Where is it

If you ever get lost in Korea and you’re looking for a specific place and you don’t know how to get there, don’t be afraid to ask someone where it is. Simple say the place or thing you are looking for, followed by “odiyeyo.” If you’re looking for Namsan Tower you would say “Namsan Tower + odiyeyo.”

photo1

8. 얼마예요(ol-ma-ye-yo) – How much is it

Similarly, if you’re looking to buy something but there’s no price tag on the object, simply say the name of the object followed by “olmayeyo” to ask how much it costs.

photo2

9. 이것 (i-geot) – This

When you don’t know how to read something on the menu but you like the picture that you see, you can still point out what you want. When you point out something specifically you say “i-geot” which means “this.”

photo3

10. 한국말 잘 못해요 (han-guk-mal jal mot-hae-yo) – My Korean isn’t very good.

Finally, if you ever feel like you will struggle to remember all these phrases, if someone approaches you to ask a question you can simply say, “han-guk-mal jal mot-hae-yo” which means “My Korean isn’t very good.” People in Korea study English in school so there is a chance that they will try to speak to in English instead.

South Korea’s National Forensic Service is currently conducting a DNA test on a body, which is believed to belong to Sewol ferry owner, Yoo Byungeun.

Investigators revealed that the body was discovered on June 12th at a plum field, and is an approximate match to 73-year-old brother of the runaway owner. Yoo byungil, the older brother, was taken into custody for allegedly pocketing funds from affiliates of the ferry operating company.

The owner of the plum farm allegedly notified a police station of the body in early June, and although the body was delivered to a hospital, hair from the body was left on the field for over a month. Police were then unable to verify the identity due to heavy decay.

Some netizens have shown their displeasure at how the case is being handled due to police not securing the body immediately after being discovered in June.

Prosecutors, who issued another arrest warrant after the first expired on Monday, were allegedly only informed that the body discovered could be Yoo Byungeun afterwards.

Investigators also allegedly told the plum farm owner that the body seemed to be an ordinary homeless person.

Despite recent cancellations of promotions and other public commitments from local celebrities in respect of the Sewol Ferry incident, Lee Minho and Park Shinhye decided to push through for the event organised by Lotte Duty Free.

On April 18th, a representative from Lotte Duty Free explained that they have decided to have continue with the commitment after holding a lengthy discussion with its respective agencies. The event continued as planned as majority of the guests were foreigners who have travel plans booked for South Korea. At least 10,000 foreign guests were scheduled to attend the event and sudden cancellations were inevitable.

However, to show respect for the mourning nation, Lotte Duty Free made changes to the program, allowing it to be more solemn.

Lotte Duty Free also cancelled two succeeding dates originally scheduled for the events and only held one set today.

South Korea is currently mourning for the 268 passengers who remain missing after a ferry capsized and sank off the shore of South Korea last Wednesday. Since then, most broadcasting agencies postponed the airing of various entertainment programs, whilst most celebrities cancelling most fan events, promotions and more.

“The ROK government will keep working closely with the Philippine side in this regard,” said Cho in a press briefing held in Seoul last Thursday. A transcript of his remarks was posted in the official South Korean foreign ministry website.

The 21-year-old female South Korean college student was found dead Tuesday after being abducted in Pasay City on March 3 while on her way to meet a friend. Her decomposing body was reportedly found in the hideout of her abductors.

On April 6, a 45-year-old South Korean businessman was fatally shot while eating dinner with his family at an outdoor restaurant in Angeles City by an unknown gunman who escaped on a motorcycle.

Last February, a 65-year-old Korean tourist was also fatally shot in Angeles City by unidentified assailants. That same month, a South Korean was found dead on a highway near Benguet.

Last year, 12 Koreans were killed but no suspects have been taken into custody.

Since 2009, there have been 40 Koreans killed in the Philippines. Between 2009 and 2013, 44 percent of some 160 murder cases of Korean nationals abroad occurred in the Philippines, according to the foreign ministry.

“The Philippine’s criminal system is weak, and, without exception, the number of crimes and killings of visitors is rising for Chinese, Japanese and Americans alike. Each visitor should stay vigilant,” the ministry said.
