A small plane carrying Mexican American singer Jenni Rivera is missing and believed to have crashed in northern Mexico early Sunday.
The Associated Press reported the plane, a Learjet, left Monterrey about 3:30 a.m. after a concert by Rivera. The pilot lost contact with air traffic contollers about 10 minutes after its departure. It was scheduled to arrive in Toluca, near Mexico City, about an hour later.
An NBCUniversal spokeswoman confirmed that Rivera was aboard the plane. Seven people, including the pilots and crew, were believed to be on the plane.
The Long Beach native’s career has been soaring. The 43-year-old singer is best known for her interpretations of regional Mexican music, norteno and banda. She also is one of NBCUniversal’s brightest bilingual television stars.
Her reality show on the Telemundo cable channel, mun2, “I Love Jenni,” has been one of the channel’s highest rated shows. The program is in its second year.
ABC television network was reportedly considering casting Rivera as a star of a prime-time sitcom in development about a strong-willed single Latina mother.
The AP said that a search for the plane was launched early Sunday.
Jenni Rivera isn’t letting her recent divorce slow her down.
La Diva de la Banda, who announced her divorce from EstebanLoaizaa few weeks ago, is dropping a new powerful and heart-wrenching single titled, “La Misma Gran Señora.”
During her radio show, Contacto directo con Jenni Rivera, the Mexican singer declared, “I wish I never married him, that’s the truth. I suffered a lot and now I see it was a mistake. The things that happened were terrible, bad enough that I finally stood up and said, ‘no more, I won’t take this anymore.’”
Written by Juan Gabriel, the single includes lyrics of a brokenhearted woman who becomes empowered by self-love. Her new single will be included in Jenni’s upcoming greatest hits compilation, which will include two unedited tracks. According to People en Español, the new album will be released in December.
Casper Smart is capitalizing on his relationship with Jennifer Lopez. After he was promoted to be one of the choreographers on Lopez’s tour, we hear J.Lo just sold a reality show to Oxygen based on Smart. Sources say it will follow Smart as he whips her other backup dancers into shape for the tour. The show is expected to focus solely on Smart and Lopez’s professional relationship. It has already been picked up as a series. An Oxygen rep had no comment.

Mexico’s electoral authority apologized to voters on Monday after a sober presidential debate was upstaged by a former Playboy model and her revealing outfit.
Clad in a tight-fitting white dress with a cut below the neckline to show much of her cleavage, Julia Orayen was working as an assistant on the televised debate, which focused on the economy and the drug-related violence ravaging Mexico.
At the start of Sunday night’s debate, Orayen walked in front of the camera to hand out cards to the four candidates, and created an immediate stir on online social media.
The appearance lasting a few seconds quickly began trending on Twitter, generating thousands of mentions. Mexican newspaper Excelsior declared her the online winner of the debate.
While many Mexicans celebrated Orayen, others condemned the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) for the incident, saying it had undermined the seriousness of the debate.
The IFE later issued a statement apologizing to the citizens of Mexico and the candidates for the “production error associated with the dress of an assistant.”
A Twitter account in Orayen’s name has picked up more than 7,000 followers since the two-hour debate.
Orayen posed nude for the Mexican edition of Playboy in 2008, a spokesman for the magazine said.

The former Miss Universe was called “retarded”, among other offenses, qualifies his comments as racist.
Former Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza was indignant with the comments of the comedian Lisa Lampanelli, who called it “delayed.”
El suceso ocurrió durante el programa de radio de Sirius XM, en el que la comediante -quien compite en el programa The Apprentice (NBC) junto a Mendoza- respondió a preguntas de un fanático que se quejó de cómo trataba a la reina de belleza. The incident occurred during the radio show on Sirius XM, which the comedian, who competes on The Apprentice (NBC) with Mendoza-answered questions from a fan who complained about how she treated the queen of beauty.
“Es una pin… “It’s a pin … retrasada. delayed. Dayana no ha tenido una idea útil en The Apprentice ; cuando las tenga en el futuro estaría bien”, dijo Lampanelli, conocida por burlarse equitativamente de todas las minorías. Dayana has not had a useful idea in The Apprentice, when you have them in the future would be fine, “said Lampanelli, known for making fun of all minorities equally. “Dayana es bella pero no es inteligente. ¿Me gustaría verme como ella? Sí. ¿Me gustaría pensar como ella? Eso no es posible de responder porque ella no piensa”. “Dayana is pretty but not smart. Would I like to look like her? Yes I would think like her? That is not possible to answer because she does not think.”
Mendoza emitió el siguiente comentario en exclusiva a PeopleEnEspanol.com a través de su representante: “Entiendo que Lisa tiene que hacer su trabajo de mofarse de los demás. Mendoza issued the following statement exclusively to PeopleEnEspanol.com through its representative: “I understand that Lisa has to do its job of mocking others. Si burlarse de los demás le ayuda a vender taquillas, no hay problema; estoy feliz de ayudarla a poner comida en la mesa. If you make fun of others helps to ticket scalping, no problem, I’m happy to help put food on the table. Sin embargo, cuando usa comentarios racistas, ella no sólo esta ofendiéndome a mí sino a la cultura hispana entera”. However, when using racist comments, she is offending not only me but the whole Hispanic culture. ”
UPDATED TRANSLATION: “I understand that it’s Lisa’s job to make fun of people for a living,” Dayana tells us. “If poking fun at me can help her sell tickets to her shows, no problem, I am happy to help her put food on her table. However, when she uses racial slurs, she is not only targeting myself, but degrading an entire hispanic culture.”
We couldn’t agree more! In case you missed Lisa’s original comments, she said:
“I actually would love to see [Dayana] giving birth. She’s a s**c! she’s going to do it f***ing soon, anyway. She’ll be knocked up before the end of the week.”

By now, you have probably heard everyone buzzing about Sofia Vergara on the April cover for Esquire’s sex issue. We opened up the glossy magazine, featuring the Colombian actress in a black lace corset with the words SEX sprawled across her hips, and discovered that the cover story has an interesting angle to it: a white man defining what it means to be Latina.
The venomous backwards narrative weaves in so many stereotypes about Latinas that we are instantly propelled to the Carmen Miranda ‘cha cha’ days. Writer Cal Fussman offers a mainstream guide of the “incomprehensible ways of the Latin woman.” What makes him a bona fide expert? He’s married to a Brazilian. Somehow we don’t think that’s an excuse to be machista.
Latinas are domestic. Fussman seems obsessed with Latinas’ domestic habits, especially cooking. Sofia Vergara calls him out on it at one point, wondering if he thought he was getting a maid when he married his wife. He says he wasn’t, but when his idea of a Latina is “great food and amazing sex,” we wonder.
Latinas are superstitious. This one comes out of nowhere, sandwiched between beauty standards and Latinas’ inability to make concrete plans. We didn’t realize Latinos were the only culture that had superstitions and old wives’ tales, but apparently so!
Latin men are cheaters. If Fussman’s wife thinks Latin men are cheaters, then they must be, right? We’re not sure if the implication is that American men are pushovers or if Vergara really believes Latinos have a “genetic disposition,” but it’s bad either way.
Latinas are controlling. Apparently, when a Latina mother fusses over her son, she just wants to control his life. Nevermind that it’s just advice and he knows (as much as she does) that he can make his own decisions.
Latinas love to dress sexy. The mainstream portrayal of the sexed-up Latina has been around since even before Charo’s “cuchi-cuchi” image back in the 70s. Sadly, it is still a prominent depiction of Latinas in primetime and Hollywood, but we know that not ALL Latinas love to dress sexy. Contrary to popular belief, we aren’t born with a tight mini-dress and heels.
Latinas are loud. Okay, just like any other human being, doesn’t this depend on the setting? Nope, apparently we have a loud switch that’s just always on. What’s loud and clear is that this stereotype is already played out.
Latinas are jealous. Well in his exact words, “fiercely territorial.” Remind us when we became possessive telenovela caricatures? Sure, it makes for good entertainment, but we don’t all have our jealousy meters set on high. Vergara even challenges him by saying, “Things have changed. Women now work. Women feel like they don’t have to take that s*&t anymore.” Our point exactly!
Latinas love to dance. The transition literally goes from talking about jealousy to hitting the dance floor! Sigh. Vergara says, “You go to a Latin party or birthday and there’s always dancing.” That may be true, but that doesn’t mean we only date partners who know how to salsa.
It’s not that there’s no truth in some of the things Vergara says in the interview – certainly, they at least seem to be true for her. The problem is that pretending this is some sort of blueprint for how all Latinas are, and how American men can exploit that knowledge to get the Sofia Vergara of their dreams, is both ridiculous and offensive.
Latinas have worked hard over the years to be more than the sexpot and the maid. It’s sad, then, that Cal Fussman seems insistent on perpetuating those stereotypes.
“Enamorada de ti,” an album featuring well-known artists such as Selena Gomez and Don Omar in posthumous duets with slain singer Selena Quintanilla, 17 years after her death, is now on sale.
The Capitol Latin record label announced in a press release that the production has three acoustic numbers and the iTunes edition includes the song “Is It the Beat,” a remix recorded by Juan Magan as a bonus track.
Selena was the stage name of Tex-Mex singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, born April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson, Texas, and murdered by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club, on March 31, 1995, in Corpus Christi.
Selena, Celia Cruz and Other Latin Music Legends Honored With U.S. Postal Stamp and Smithsonian Guitars
In 1995, Selena made history by becoming the first artist to simultaneously have five Spanish-language albums among Billboard’s Top 200 Albums.
The new album includes collaborations by Cristian Castro, Don Omar and Selena Gomez.
In March, Chris Pérez, the guitarist to whom the singer was married when she was killed, published a book in which he tells his story of love with the queen of Tex-Mex music in both Spanish and English.
Last Spring, the U.S. Postal service announced that Quintanilla would be getting her own stamp along with the late greats Tito Puente, Carmen Miranda, Selena, Carlos Gardel and Celia Cruz.
The stamps are part of the “Latin Music Legends Series” and were given to these artists in particular for their invaluable contributions to the entertainment industry and international impact.
“There is no doubt that the legends are deserving of this recognition,” said Roy Betts, manager of community relations for the U.S. Postal Service. “We are proud to be bringing them to life.”
“They have made historic contributions,” he added. “They are icons not only in the Latin community, but in a larger stage.”
Betts is not surprised that these entertainers were the chosen few for the prestigious honor. According to the spokesman, the tribute speaks volumes of the U.S. Latin American community.
