A former professional footballer’s head has been severed and left on the doorstep of his home in a rucksack.

The horrified wife of Joao Rodrigo Silva Santos, 35, made the gruesome discovery as she left the house in Rio de Janeiro for work early yesterday morning.

The player’s eyes and tongue had been cut out and his head placed inside one of his own rucksacks, police said.

Mr Santos retired from football two years ago after a successful career playing for several teams in Rio de Janeiro, as well as for clubs in Sweden and Honduras.

He had recently set up his own business selling health foods and dietary supplements.

Police said today that Mr Santos is believed to have been snatched as he closed up his shop late on Monday night.

Witnesses said they saw several men bundling him into his car, a Hyundai i30, and speeding off just before midnight, a spokesman said.

Mr Santos’ brother-in-law, who didn’t want to be named, told Brazil’s Globo G1 website that the player’s wife, Geisa Silva, 31, stayed up all night after her husband failed to arrive home.

He said: “Every time a car passed by she would go to see.

“She was getting ready to go to work at around 5.30am when she heard a noise, opened the front door and saw his rucksack. When she opened it, it was his head.

“From what I know, he didn’t have any enemies and neither did his wife.”

Investigators are probing whether Mr Santos was murdered by a drugs gang because of Ms Silva’s work at a military police base in a local slum.

The ‘Police Pacification Unit’ in the Morro do Sao Carlos is one of dozens set up in Rio’s favelas to retake control of the city’s slums from violent drug traffickers.

However, according to police chief Rafael Rangel, Mrs Silva worked as a social worker in the base and didn’t patrol the streets or make arrests like other police officers.

He told Brazil’s O Dia newspaper the motives of the murder are still unclear.

He said: “Mrs Silva has no idea who would have done this.

“Neither she, her husband or any other member of the family have suffered any type of threat as far as she knows.

“There is nothing that would justify such a barbarous crime.”

He added that police have begun searching for the rest of Mr Santos’ body.

  • Shots fired during party outside off-campus apartments
  • Two former football players Ed Christian and LaDarius Phillips killed, and current player Eric Mack injured
  • Alleged gunman identified as Desmonte Leonard, who has not yet been captured

Three people have been reported killed and at least two others injured following a shooting at an off-campus housing complex at Auburn University in what is believed to have been a fight over a girl.

Little is known about the details of the shooting, but reports have emerged saying that among the victims were two former Auburn football players who were shot after a fistfight erupted.

Turquorius Vines, 23, said he was at the party Saturday evening at the University Heights apartments with one of his friends.

He said he and Pitts were approached by two other men who started arguing with them over a woman.

Vines said he punched one of the men, while Pitts hit both of the men over the head with a bottle.

Then, one of them started shooting, he said.

Among the dead were former Auburn football players Ed Christian and LaDarius Phillips. A third student at the school, Demario Pitts, was also killed.

Police identified their killer as Desmonte Leonard, who has been charged with capital murder. He has not yet been captured.

Police Chief Tommy Dawson told Al.com: ‘I’d like to reach out to Mr. Leonard to turn himself in today.’

Current Auburn football player Eric Mack was shot, but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Xavier Moss and John Robertson were also wounded.

On Sunday, Mack tweeted: ‘I appreciate all the love and prayers for me and my two lost homies. May god be with their families. #Auburn’.

Vines said he had never before seen the men who he had been arguing with.

‘It’s like I lost a lung,’ Vines said of his friend. ‘I don’t know how I’m going to survive this.’

Several emergency vehicles had converged overnight around the University Heights apartment complex where reports indicated a number of students who attend Auburn University typically reside.

The building was swathed in yellow police tape.

It appeared that the shooting happened in an archway near the apartment complex information center, near the edge of the parking lot.

Five uniformed officers guarded the area, which was sealed off with crime scene tape, and a handful of crime scene investigators were at work.

After daybreak Sunday, several uniformed officers stood near a disaster relief trailer parked at the building’s entrance, which appeared to be a sort of command center.

Some bystanders milled about, looking on at the scene.

It is also thought police are still looking for the gunman following the incident.

In an attempt to protect the crime scene police have erected a tent while forensic officers carry out their investigations.

Vasha Hunt, a photographer with the Opelika-Auburn News, was at the apartment complex and told AP by telephone early Sunday that authorities had set up a white tent there.

Police were photographed conversing together behind the taped-off scene as, later, rain began falling.

Hunt said many of those who initially gathered outside appeared to be residents waiting for permission to enter their apartments while several police cars and other vehicles were parked around the entrance.

Police also set up large lights illuminating the area and about a dozen police cars, ambulances and other emergency vehicles were photographed around the blocked-off entrance, he added.

Some other reports said students looking on at the scene appeared somber and that residents who showed identification were later let back into their apartments.

Police have said they will not be releasing any further information.

Italians have expressed shock and sadness at the death of Livorno footballer Piermario Morosini, who collapsed during a game on Saturday.

The grief was reflected in front-page headlines in most of Italy’s Sunday newspapers.

Some focused on his tragic past. Morosini lost both his parents before he was 18, and shortly after that his disabled brother killed himself.

All Italian matches were cancelled and an autopsy will be held on Monday.

‘Only tears’

Morosini, 25, had been on loan from Serie A side Udinese when he collapsed on the pitch in the 31st minute while playing in Livorno’s Serie B game at Pescara.

He tried to get up a number of times before receiving heart massage on the pitch. A defibrillator was also used before an ambulance took him to Pescara’s Santo Spirito hospital.

Doctors there tried unsuccessfully to revive him for 30 minutes.

Hospital consultant Leonardo Paloscia said: “Morosini never had a single heartbeat again. From when I arrived he never gave a sign of revival, not in his respiration nor his heartbeat.”

Dr Paloscia said it was unlikely any cause could be determined until after the autopsy.

Pescara goalkeeper Luca Anania said players did not immediately understand the seriousness of the incident.

“There was great confusion and I seemed to understand that there was also a bit of delay in help arriving. Some of my teammates helped carry the stretcher by hand to the ambulance.”

Many players left the field in tears.

The Italian press on Sunday paid tribute to Morosini.

Turin-based Tuttosport’s headline read, “We have lost a son”, while La Repubblica’s editorial was headlined, “Incredulous and helpless”.

The Gazzetta dello Sport focused on the controversy over the medical assistance.

An inquiry has been launched into why a traffic police car had to be broken into and removed as it was blocking the ambulance’s entrance.

The Corriere dello Sport focused on the tragic elements of Morosini’s life, which left him alone with his disabled elder sister. “A life marked by pain,” was its headline.

Morosini was an Italy under-21 international and played for a number of clubs, including Atalanta, Reggina, Padova, Bologna and Vicenza.

“He was golden, always trying to help his family,” Atalanta youth team director Mino Favini told Associated Press.

Fifa president Sepp Blatter tweeted: “Only tears. There are no words to express what I tried to when I found out about Piermario Morosini’s death.”

The tragedy follows a similar incident involving Bolton’s Fabrice Muamba last month.

He was technically “dead” for 78 minutes after collapsing in an FA Cup tie against Tottenham but is now making “strong and steady improvements”.

Following Muamba’s collapse, attention had been drawn to the situation for athletes in Italy, which has mandatory cardiac screening for all young people engaged in organised sport.

The charity Cardiac Risk in the Young says that the Italian measures have reduced the incidence of young sudden cardiac death in Italy by 90% in the 30 years since the screening was introduced.
