Magic Johnson didn’t hide how much he wanted a Phil Jackson-Lakers reunion, and the team opting for Mike D’Antoni isn’t changing that.
“The reason I haven’t tweeted in 2 days is because I’ve been mourning Phil Jackson not being hired as the Lakers head coach,” the Hall of Famer tweeted on Wednesday morning.
Johnson last tweeted on Nov. 11 and made his stance known two days before that, while the Lakers were in ultimately failed negotiations with Jackson.
“(Owner) Jim Buss has another big decision. The @Lakers need a championship caliber coach,” Johnson wrote. “I’d love to see Phil Jackson or Brian Shaw. Wish Pat Riley was available.”
LA wound up with none of those three—and that upset Johnson, who played his entire career with the franchise and was
a minority owner before selling his share in the run-up to his involvement with the LA Dodgers’ ownership group.
“My mother always taught me that if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything
at all,” Johnson tweeted.
The Lakers agreed to terms with D’Antoni late on Saturday night and told Jackson shortly after.
