Dr Rashmi Patel was performing the procedure on Judith Gan, 64,  on 17 February when she lost consciousness in the state of Connecticut.

Patel’s assistant had tried to stop him before calling the emergency services, according to New York Daily News. But it was too late and she had “already flat-lined”.

“Gan did not have to die to receive this dental treatment and it is because of Patel’s negligence that she died,” said a dentist reviewing the case for the state department of public health.

Patel has since had his licence revoked in the US and has been suspended, pending a further hearing next month in front of the state dental commission.

“He has been ordered to stay away from his patients after one died and another spent six days in the hospital,” state health officials said.

Janet DiFiore DA Attorney Under Fire For Pulling Strings To Get Live-In Housekeeper Marina Buchanan Welfare

Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore pulled strings to get her family’s live-in housekeeper food stamps, cash assistance and Medicaid benefits, according to an internal report from the county’s Department of Social Services.

For the past year, Social Services has been probing how DiFiore’s housekeeper was suddenly approved for welfare benefits after having been previously denied three times for inconsistencies in her applications, The Post has learned.

“Okay we got to the bottom of this case. This was a political favor for Janet DiFiore’s maid. It is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE,” Dhyalma Vazquez, a county anti-fraud investigator, wrote in an internal e-mail June 30, 2011.

Vazquez, who also chairs the Yonkers Independence Party, alleged in the e-mail to Department of Social Services Commissioner Kevin McGuire that DiFiore’s housekeeper, Jamaican immigrant Marina Buchanan, should never have received benefits.

In a series of e-mails from June and July of last year, Vazquez claimed that DiFiore, a Republican-turned- Democrat, had Buchanan’s case file improperly re-opened after the Yonkers branch office denied benefits.

Buchanan, 58, was paid $200 a week in cash by DiFiore and got $315 a month in Social Security disability benefits, according to documents obtained by The Post.

It is unclear from the documents if Social Security taxes were paid on Buchanan’s wages.

Buchanan, who claimed she was a nanny and housekeeper for DiFiore since 1987, also didn’t disclose receiving the Social Security disability benefits while still working up to 18 hours a week for the DA.

Further, she had a credit card with a $55,000 limit, sources said, yet still sought county benefits.

“The question is why the special favor. Why are cases being opened in Central Office . . . Just because she is the District Attorney does not mean she is above the law!” Vazquez wrote.

County investigators are looking at the actions of a former Social Services official who is active in local Democratic politics, sources said.

Reached by phone, Vazquez, who has been with Social Services for 20 years, cited the ongoing investigation and declined to comment.

DiFiore’s spokesman, Lucian Chalfen, said, “It is a personal issue that is related to her and her husband and I can’t comment.”

Her three children are now all in their 20s. It’s unclear if Buchanan still works for DiFiore, who was first elected DA in 2005.

Buchanan, who could not be reached for comment, wrote in documents that she left the DA’s employ in May 2010.

According to AFP,  Former US first lady Nancy Reagan is “slowly” recovering from a fall a few weeks ago which left her with fractured ribs, her spokeswoman said Wednesday.

The 90-year-old widow of president Ronald Reagan canceled her attendance at an event at the Reagan Library in California on Tuesday evening because doctors her advised her against it, said spokeswoman Joanne Drake.

“Weeks ago Mrs. Reagan took a fall at home and fractured a number of ribs,” she told AFP.

“She has been recovering slowly and has been adding a few appointments back on to her schedule, but was advised by her doctor not to try and attend large events too far from home just yet.

“She personally invited Congressman Paul Ryan to speak at the Reagan Library and really wanted to be there, but sent her apologies to him early yesterday,” she said in an email.

The fall occurred at Reagan’s home in Bel Air, just outside Los Angeles in March, CNN reported. The Reagan Library is in Simi Valley, an hour or so north of the city.

Nancy Reagan appears in public relatively rarely. Last year she laid a wreath for her husband at the Presidential Library on the 100th anniversary of his birthday in February.

Desmond Hatchett 33, Has 30 Kids With 11 Women, Kids Get $1.49 A Month, Pleading For Help (Photo & Video Link)

You have to say this much for Desmond Hatchett: He has a way with the ladies.

The 33-year-old Knoxville, Tenn., resident has reportedly set a Knox County record for his ability to reproduce. He has 30 children with 11 women. And nine of those children were born in the last three years, after Hatchett — who is something of a local celebrity — vowed  “I’m done!” in a 2009 TV interview, saying he wouldn’t father more children.

But Hatchett is back in the news this week because he’s struggling to make ends meet on his minimum-wage job. His inability to make child-support payments on such a meager salary also means he’s back in court again and again, most recently to ask for a break on those payments.

“Yes, we’ve got several cases with Mr. Hatchett,” Melissa Gibson, an assistant supervisor with the Knox County child support clerk’s office, said with a sigh.

Hatchett’s attorney, Keith Pope, did not return phone calls seeking comment.

Under the law, there’s nothing officials can do to force Hatchett to keep his pants on.

“If there’s something out there like that, I’m unaware of it,” Gibson told The Times, before adding, “It definitely needs to be.”

Gibson said Hatchett is believed to hold the Knox County record for most children. (He’d hold a similar record in most counties in the U.S., which might explain why news of his predicament was pinging around the Internet on Friday.)

Gibson said she couldn’t say whether any of his children receive public assistance. The youngest is a toddler; the oldest is 14. Asked in a TV interview whether he can “keep up with it all,” Hatchett said he knows all their names, ages and birthdates.

Also in a TV interview, Hatchett tried to explain — in a PG-rated way — how he managed to end up with so many kids: “I had four kids in the same year. Twice.”

When Hatchett is working, he is required to turn over 50% of his wages for child support — the maximum allowed under law. Child support payments are based in part on the ages and needs of the children.

Some of the mothers of Hatchett’s children get only $1.49 a month, reported WREG in Memphis.

Aimee Copeland 24, Fighting For Life Contracted Flesh-Eating Bacteria Losing Limbs (Video Link)

A University of West Georgia graduate student who lost one limb and will probably lose others to flesh-eating bacteria is mouthing words to her family and showing a “fighting spirit,” her father said Friday.

Aimee Copeland is fighting for her life at an Augusta hospital after her left leg and part of her abdomen were removed last week. She contracted the infection after injuring her calf in a zip line accident 10 days ago.

“I would say that she has more commands than questions right now,” Andy Copeland told “CNN Newsroom,” saying his daughter’s breathing tube was repositioned so her parents could read her lips. “‘I can’t talk,’ was what she said. And we said, ‘We know, honey, you’ve got a tube down your throat.’

“She said, ‘Then take it out.’ So her fighting spirit is obviously shining through right now.’

Aimee, 24, contracted the bacteria  Aeromonas hydrophila  during an outing with friends near the Little Tallapoosa River, about 50 miles west of Atlanta, on May 1, her family has said. She fell when a homemade zip line she was using snapped, and she gashed her left calf.

The family has said she sought medical treatment for the wound and received 22 staples to close it,  according to CNN affiliate WSB . But on May 4, after she complained of pain for days, a friend took her to an emergency room, and she was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis and flown to Augusta for surgery. She went into cardiac arrest after being removed from the operating table, but was resuscitated,  CNN affiliate WGCL reported.

Her father wrote in an Internet post Thursday that her hands and remaining foot also will have to be amputated soon, because blood vessels there have died as the disease has spread. He said Friday that Aimee doesn’t yet know about these next amputations.

“There’s no way I would reveal that to her in her current state. I believe that it would just traumatize her further,” he said, adding that a psychiatrist at the hospital will tell her when she’s able to talk.

Andy Copeland wrote Thursday that Aimee shows no sign of brain damage and that a doctor said her lungs are healing. On Friday, he told CNN the road ahead for Aimee will be difficult.

“It’s obvious (that) if you’re missing one limb, it’s going to be hard enough. But if you’re missing all of your limbs, it’s going to be incredibly difficult,” he said. “But I guess I want everybody to know is that she’s not alone. She’s got her family to support her in this, and not just us.”

“She’s got the support of the entire world right now. And that’s really what’s humbled us greatly in this entire process, just knowing that everybody’s looking at Aimee and praying for Aimee and just offering their undying support. For that, we’ll be eternally grateful.”

Aimee Copeland, of Snellville, Georgia, is a graduate psychology student at the University of West Georgia and was scheduled to complete her master’s degree in the fall, school spokeswoman Yolanda Rodriguez said.

On Thursday night, a couple dozen students and faculty members attended a vigil for her in a building that houses the school’s psychology department.

“Despite the fact that medical evidence says she should be dead, she isn’t. I think that’s what makes it so precious to so many people, to see how amazing she really is,” Chris Aanstoos, a University of West Georgia professor, told WSB on Thursday.

Dr. Buddy Creech, an assistant professor of pediatric infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University, said that Aeromonas hydrophila, found in water and elsewhere in the environment, is one of many bacteria that can cause a flesh-eating process.

“When it gets into those deeper tissues, it has a remarkable ability to destroy the tissues that surround it in sort of this hunt for nutrition,” Creech said Friday. “When it does that, those tissues die, and you see the inflammation and the swelling and the destruction that can be very difficult to control.”

Creech said Aeromonas hydrophila more commonly affects humans when it is swallowed  resulting in diarrhea. When young children or children with immune problems drink water with the bacteria, “they can get a very significant diarrhea illness from it,” he said.

“It’s much more uncommon that we see it in (a case like Copeland’s), where we see wounds get infected and the infection runs wild,” Creech said.

Patricia Krentcil Arrested and Charged For Taking Her 5 Year Daughter Anna To A Tanning Salon (Videos)

The New Jersey mother accused of allowing her 5-year-old daughter to use a tanning booth has denied the allegations after she was arrested and charged with second-degree child endangerment.

Although Patricia Krentcil doesn’t deny that the child has been to the tanning salon with her, she says daughter Anna suffered from outdoor sunburn.

“The pediatrician said that she’s got a little sunburn, but it was that only weekend we were out doing the gardening,” Krentcil, 44, said.

It was Anna’s school nurse who noticed she had a rash, and when the little girl told her it was from going tanning with her mother, the school notified child services. Krentcil said that while her daughter was in the room with her at the salon, she was never in the tanning booth.

“I never once in my life let me daughter, especially at that age, go into a tanning booth,” Krentcil said.

She describes the girl’s burns as not severe, and says she was told to put ointment on the rash, which she says is “just over-the-counter stuff.”

Officials acknowledged the school’s involvement and say they believe that Krentcil took the child into the tanning booth without the salon’s knowledge.

“The little girl went to school and reported she had these burns and that caused the school to contact authorities,” Katherine Carter, spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, said.

Carter declined to name the Nutley, N.J., tanning salon, citing the “ongoing investigation.”

Ultraviolet lights in tanning beds are not only dangerous for children, but the UV light can damage DNA, causing mutations as well as formations of dangerous skin cancer cells.

“There’s really no excuse to take a young child to a tanning salon,” New York dermatologist Doris Day said. “We often consider going to a tanning salon the equivalent of smoking for the skin and the younger you start, those affects are cumulative.”

Because of the negative effects, New Jersey law doesn’t allow anyone younger than 14 is to use a tanning facility. Teens older than14 are allowed to go to salons but only with parental consent.

Krentcil is out on $25,000 bail, while her daughter in now in her father’s custody.

A Mexican woman is pregnant with nine babies – six girls and three boys – the country’s main broadcaster Televisa reported on Thursday night.

The woman was identified as Karla Vanessa Perez of the northeastern state of Coahuila, which borders Texas. She is currently being treated at a hospital in the state capital Saltillo, the broadcaster said in the report.

Perez, whose age was not given, had fertility treatment leading to the multiple pregnancy, it said.

State-owned news agency Notimex also reported the pregnancy, saying Perez was due to give birth on May 20.

“It’s very early to think of names for the babies,” Perez told Notimex. “First I hope that everything goes well.”

The successful delivery of nonuplets would be one of the highest multiple births ever recorded.

In 2009, a woman in California gave birth to octuplets, sparking worldwide media attention.

Diana Mey Sued Debt Collector “RFA” For $10 Million Dollars On “Nightline” 4/25/12

In a twist of irony, a West Virginia woman is trying to collect money from a collection agency.  Diana Mey, of Wheeling, W. Va., won the largest judgment ever against an abusive debt collection company — more than $10 million.

“I’m a mom, and I’m a housewife, and I’m an accidental activist,” Mey said.

From her small-town home base in Wheeling, Mey went after a debt collection empire that hounds people nationwide and won. But she still hasn’t received any money.

“I don’t know that I’ll ever collect a dime, but if I can get their operation shut down, that would make me very happy.”

Watch the full story on “Nightline” TONIGHT at 11:35 p.m. ET/PT

It all started two years ago when a debt collector with a company called Reliant Financial Associates, or RFA, left a message implying that her house was in jeopardy if she didn’t pay a debt.  The message stated:

“I’m calling in regards to a preliminary asset liability investigation. They are in the process of serving some court documents in regards to case 29369… They have some information now pending questions at the property,…

Springdale Avenue, in Wheeling, West Virginia. It is in your best interests to contact the department.  You are required to contact 866-764-9779.

Diana Mey, of Wheeling, W. Va., won the largest judgment ever against an abusive debt collection company — more than 10 million dollars. But she is still waiting to collect damages.
It is illegal for debt collectors to make empty threats about serving people with a lawsuit or seizing their home.  And it was especially galling to Mey, who says she is debt-free.

“They threatened to take legal action against our property and it wasn’t even our debt,” Mey said.

Millions of Americans are victims of this kind of mistaken debtor identity, partly because of a new breed of collectors called “debt buyers.” They purchase old debts for pennies that the original creditors have given up on and then try to collect them for a big profit.  Critics say debt buyers sometimes use outrageous tactics to get the money where others have failed. RFA is a debt buyer.

Mey wrote RFA a cease and desist letter, telling the company not to contact her anymore, and sent it certified mail. Postal records show exactly when RFA signed for it. Precisely 23 minutes later, Mey started getting mysterious hang-up calls that showed up on her caller ID as coming from her local county government.

“So I called the number back and it was the sheriff’s department.  And I asked if someone there was trying to reach me. And they said, no – nobody there was trying to reach me,” Mey said.

After two days of hang-up calls from that sheriff’s department number, Mey picked up another one with that same caller ID. The man on the line repeatedly called her a vulgar name for the female anatomy.  He described violent sexual acts he would like to subject her to and asked if she liked to be “gang banged.”

“I was so frightened.  I felt violated, but then I realized, you know, I’m taping this call,.” Mey said. “I pulled myself together and I thought, I can get through this.  Just keep on talking buddy because we’re gonna get plenty of your voice on tape.”

The verbal assault went on for nearly two minutes before the man hung up.

Mey said she immediately called 911 to report that someone had threatened to sexually assault her. She says she was terrified because she believed the call was from a local number.  Mey said she then bolted the door and got her husband’s gun out of the dresser and hung it on the bedpost in her bedroom.

Natalee Holloway Alleged Killer Joran Van der Sloot May Head To United States

According to  New York Daily News,  American authorities want to try Joran Andreas Petrus van der Sloot on charges of extortion and wire fraud in the Holloway case.

“I think he will be extradited within the next three months,” said Van der Sloot’s attorney, Maximo Altez. “He will go to trial in the United States. Once he is sentenced, he will return to Peru to finish serving his 28 years, and then go back to the States to serve whatever sentence he gets there.”

According to the report, the only delay is Van der Sloot’s appeal against the extradition, which should be finished in a month.

Van der Sloot was indicted by an American grand jury in 2010 after he allegedly attempted to extort $250,000 from Holloway’s mother for information on her whereabouts. She ended up shelling out $25,000, but the Dutch citizen provided what appears to be false information.

He allegedly used that money to travel to a poker tournament in Peru. If found guilty of extortion, he could face up to 24 years in prison.

Natalee Holloway, who was 18 when she disappeared on a class trip to Aruba, has never been found. Van der Sloot was never charged with her murder, but is believed to be the last person to see her alive and is widely suspected in her death.

She was declared legally dead last January.

Colombian Hooker Dania First Time Revealed In The Secret Service Sex Scandal (Photos)

Here are the first photos of the 24-year-old Colombian hooker whose encounter  with Secret Service agents caused the biggest sex scandal in agency history.

The single mom, who has only been identified as Dania, said she was stiffed  by cheap agents who only wanted to pay her just $30, not the $80 she had asked.

“I tell him, ‘Baby, my cash money,” the woman was quoted by The New York  Times.

One of the agents, she said, cursed at her and tossed her out of the hotel.

The hooker said she agreed to $250, the amount she gives her pimp. and the  agent only forked over $225.

The photo comes as it was revealed this morning that the agents did their own  sexy advance work — booking a hotel party space for prostitutes in Colombia  before hitting the town to scout local pros, according to a new report.

President Obama’s men made reservations for a party room, big enough to hold  30 people, at at the Hotel Caribe in Cartagena, and then hit a local brothel, ABC News reported today.

The boom-boom room bombshell shows that disgraced agents were getting the lay  of the land, in advance to long night of fun.

After booking hotel party space, Secret Service Agents and military aides — tasked with advance work for Obama’s trip to Colombia — visited the “Pley Club”  where they pounded top-shelf whiskey and enjoyed sexual services from working  gals, ABC reported.

The men reportedly brought Pley Club hookers and other ladies of the night,  picked up at other hot spots around town, back to Hotel Caribe.

That’s where at least one of the ladies and American Johns bickered over her  payment, leading to police to his hotel room and blowing the lid off the agents’ naughty night.

At least three Secret Service agents have lost their jobs over the embarrassing incident.

Meanwhile, the Secret Service is moving quickly to quell the prostitution  scandal.

“It’s certainly not over,” said Rep. Peter King (R-NY), chairman of the House  Homeland Security Committee, which oversees the Secret Service.

The Secret Service did not identify the agents being forced out or eight  others who remain on administrative leave. In a statement, the service said one  supervisor was allowed to retire, and another will be fired for cause.

A third employee, who was not a supervisor, has resigned.

The two supervisors are in the agency’s uniformed division; one is a  sergeant, according to a person familiar with Secret Service operations and  refused to be identified because he was not authorized to discuss the  matter.

The team under investigation includes members of the agency’s “jump teams,”  which are sent to sites ahead of the president’s arrival to set up security.  Others involved are on counter-assault and counter-sniper teams. The majority of  those involved are believed to be based in the Washington area.

Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan has offered the agents under  investigation the opportunity to take a polygraph test, though the agents can  refuse.

The agents were implicated in the prostitution scandal in Colombia that also  involved about 10 military service members and as many as 20 women. All the  Secret Service workers who were involved had their security clearances  revoked.

The scandal erupted last week after 11 Secret Service agents were sent home  from Cartagena, on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, after a night of partying that  reportedly ended with at least some of them bringing prostitutes back to their  hotel. The special agents and uniformed officers were in Colombia in advance of  Obama’s arrival for the Summit of the Americas.

Verna Deann McClain A Nurse Gunned Down New Mother Kayla Marie Golden & Snatched Newborn Keegan Schuchardt (Photos & Video)

A registered nurse arrested for gunning down and killing a new mother and snatching her 3-day-old baby in the parking lot of a Texas pediatrician’s office will face capital murder charges, according to the Montgomery County district attorney.

The newborn, Keegan Schuchardt, was found alive and well six hours after his 28-year-old mother Kayla Marie Golden was killed Tuesday, according to police. The suspect in the killing, Verna Deann McClain, a 30-year-old mother of three, is in police custody.

“She’s given a full statement to the detectives with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department,” the district attorney, Brett Ligon, said today on “Good Morning America.” “As part of the statement with that agency, in conjunction with the other evidence that we were able to obtain yesterday…we did charge her [McClain] in the early hours of this morning with capital murder.”

Golden was standing by her pickup truck outside the pediatrician’s office in Spring, Texas, around 2:40 p.m. when a car with a man and woman inside pulled up. There was reportedly an altercation, after which the woman got out and shot the mother repeatedly with what was believed to be a 9mm pistol, then took the baby and drove off.

“My baby, my baby!,” Golden reportedly screamed as her infant boy was taken from his car seat.

As the mother lay dying in the parking lot, a description of the getaway vehicle and occupants quickly went out as an Amber Alert. Golden later died at a local hospital.

Police were led to the Fawndale Apartments in Houston, where sources said a SWAT team entered a unit and found a woman inside speaking on the phone with another woman. Investigators were then able to track the woman on the other phone to a home in north Harris County, where baby Keegan was found.

“It’s unusual to get such a large swing of events, to go from the murder to the recovery of the child and have the suspect in custody all in a matter of few hours,” Ligon told “GMA.” Rarely do things work out like they do on TV but, in this case, I can’t say enough about law enforcement here in Montgomery County.”

An affidavit obtained by ABC News from the Montgomery County police states that McClain admitted to shooting Golden and taking the baby to her home in Texas’ Harris County.

According to the affidavit, McClain’s sister, Corina Jackson, had recently said that her sister would be adopting a baby soon. After she allegedly killed Golden and stole her newborn,

McClain stated to her sister that she now had the child. McClain has three children ages 16, 10 and 6.

“There were statements that were made by Ms. McClain that led us to believe this was an intentional act on her part, not that Ms. Golden was targeted specifically, but that this was part of a plan to kidnap a child,” Ligon said.

Witnesses said the mom fought to keep the baby from the kidnappers, but ended up in the parking lot with gunshot wounds.

“She was laying on the ground.  She wasn’t moving for nothing,” witness Joshua Jesson told ABC station KTRK in Houston. “But then I saw a blue Lexus drive off in that direction.”

“The child was being put into the suspect vehicle and that’s when the mother tried to get into the car,” Lt. Dan Norris with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said. “The car sped away, knocking the lady to the ground.”

The female suspect, McClain, was described by witnesses at the scene as a black female carrying a small caliber pistol, possibly a 9mm.

Baby Keegan remains in custody of the state’s Child Protective Services while officials conduct a full background investigation on his father, Keith Schuchardt, before the newborn is returned to his care, according to Ligon.

“I expect them to be reunited this morning or sometime this afternoon,” he said. “Obviously for the father, Keith, it has been a roller coaster. You lose your wife one day but you’re able to recover your child, it’s an emotional swing not many people would be prepared for but I understand he’s holding up well.”

Trayvon Martin’s Mother Sybrina Fulton Believes Shooting Death Was “An Accident” (Video)

Saying she believed the encounter that led to the shooting death of her 17-year-old son was “an accident,’’ Sybrina Fulton revealed on NBC’s  Today show her opinion in the case for the first time Thursday.

“I believe it was an accident,’’ Fulton said. “I believe that it just got out of control, and he couldn’t turn the clock back.’’

Fulton later clarified her statement to say she believed the encounter between her unarmed son and the neighborhood watchman who shot and killed him was an accident, not the shooting itself.

Details of the events that led up to the death of Miami Gardens teenager Trayvon Martin are still emerging Thursday after George Zimmerman, 28, was charged with second-degree murder following 45 days of protests, petitions and intense national media coverage of the case.

Zimmerman is scheduled for a bond hearing at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Seminole County after turning himself in to police late Wednesday following the announcement of charges against him. Florida Department of Law Enforcement officials later transported Zimmerman from Jacksonville to Sanford, where he is now a protective custody inmate at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility.

Mark O’Mara, Zimmerman’s defense attorney, said his client will plead not guilty to the charge. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.

O’Mara told CNN Thursday morning that Zimmerman is fatigued from more than a month of seclusion.

“He’s stressed,’’ O’Mara said of Zimmerman. “He’s tired. He’s been through a lot with the way this case has been handled to date.’’

Trayvon’s family also has been through a lot, said Fulton, Trayvon’s mother, speaking on the  Today show Thursday.

Asked what she would say to Zimmerman if given the opportunity, Fulton said: “I would ask him, did he know that that was a minor, that that was a teenager and that he did not have a weapon.’’

Fulton added that she sympathizes with the Zimmerman family, but asked for their understanding as well.

“I understand that his family is hurting, but think about our family. We lost our teenage son,’’ she told  Today show anchor Ann Curry. “I’m sure his parents can pick up the phone and call him, but we can’t pick up the phone and call Trayvon any more.’’

Thursday’s bond hearing will be Zimmerman’s first appearance before a judge, who will explain the charges against him. The judge could order Zimmerman to be released on bail, or that he be held without bond.

O’Mara, who took the case Wednesday night after Zimmerman’s previous attorneys resigned, expressed surprise at the second-degree murder charges, and said he thought “it might be manslaughter’’ — a lesser charge.

Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder, a first-degree felony — a far more serious charge than the manslaughter arrest most experts were predicting. The decision to file the charge was made by special prosecutor Angela Corey, the Jacksonville-based state attorney for Duval, Clay and Nassau counties, who vowed to fight a self-defense claim and insisted that she did not bow to public pressure.

O’Mara said a pre-trial motion to dismiss the charges based on a claim of self-defense “could well occur, but it’s way too premature.’’
